Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 green pepper, diced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 450 g lean ground beef
- 340 g (1 and 1/3 cups) tomato sauce
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp. l. brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp mustard
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- A pinch of cayenne pepper
- 6 hamburger buns, toasted
Preparation:
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the onion and black pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and beginning to brown in places, 6-7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the ground beef with a wooden spoon or spatula, until browned and cooked through, 7-8 minutes.
- Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and plenty of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, 5-6 minutes. Spoon the meat sauce onto the toasted buns.
